Phillip Island Preview

September 09, 2009

The penultimate round of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship heads to Phillip Island this weekend, with CAMS Rising Star Scott Pye desperate to keep in touch with championship leader Nick Percat.

Percat has the opportunity to wrap up the 2009 Championship this weekend, but Scott Pye (currently third in the Championship) still remains in contention with two rounds to go.

“We’ll be doing everything we can to make sure Nick has a fight on his hands. We tested really well at Phillip Island last week so I am pretty confident we can be in the points this weekend,” Pye said.

“He (Percat) has a pretty handy lead going into this round, but it only takes a bout of bad luck and the best laid plans can be turned on their head. My goal is to just bag as many points as I can and hopefully in the wash-up, still be in contention for the last round on the Gold Coast,” Pye said.

Pye will be joined with teammates Nathan Morcom and Luke Ellery in the weekend’s Phillip Island campaign. Ellery remains in touch with the top ten (currently in ninth position), while Morcom is looking to have a consistent weekend and build some momentum coming into the last rounds.

“I am really looking to remain in the top ten and have a really positive end to the 2009 season. I had some really good results at Sandown (qualifying second) and am looking to be in touch with the frontrunners this weekend,” Ellery said.

The CAMS Rising Stars will be assisted this weekend with the knowledge and experience of former Rising Star Ashley Walsh. Walsh is competing in the final two rounds of the championship in a bid to revive his racing career in Australia. Walsh will run in the Borland Racing Development’s Spectrum this weekend at Phillip Island and the season finale on the Gold Coast.

Races one and three of the seventh round of the 2009 Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship will be telecast live on the Seven Network on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Please check your local guides.
