Webber caps off weekend of Aussie success

October 19, 2009

The AMSF congratulates Mark Webber on claiming the second race win of his Formula One career with victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix yesterday.

Starting from second position Webber, an AMSF patron, put in a steady performance early, allowing him to take the lead for the second half of the race and cruise to a comfortable victory ahead of Robert Kubica and Lewis Hamilton. Jenson Button’s fifth place finish was enough to win him the world championship title with one race remaining.

“I put myself in a very, very good position after yesterday in the first stint to win the race and then I had about 45 laps of getting it home,” Webber said.

“I went a little bit on the kerbs in a few places here and there and just had to give myself a bit of an uppercut and say ‘mate, just bring it together’ and remind myself that I’m not in tenth, I’m in the lead, so you just control it. It was a pretty good day.”

Webber’s win capped off a thrilling weekend of motor sport with success to fellow Aussies, Casey Stoner who won his third consecutive Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix title at Phillip Island; and Jason Crump who claimed his third speedway world championship title in six years.

Webber paid tribute to Crump and Stoner in his post race press conference saying, “It was a good weekend for a good friend of mine, Jason Crump who won the World Speedway Championship. He’s very, very injured and I’m very happy for him that he’s won the world title and Casey (Stoner) won the motorbikes, so it was a good day for us guys.”
